About the Survey
The current job market uncertainty sweeping the nation has raised many questions. Here at The IT Job Board we were keen to find out the career intentions of IT professionals for the coming year. Below are the results of a recent survey conducted of 350 IT workers.

Career Intentions for 2009
A massive 89% of respondents are planning to change their jobs. Of these, 53% quoted ‘better career opportunities’ as the main reason for wanting to switch, with 45% selecting to move for more money. With more companies holding back spending on training, it is no surprise to see 25% of respondents planning to move jobs in search of ‘more and better training’.

Of the 11% that were not planning to change jobs, 46% stated they were happy in their current job. The state of the economic climate came second with 36% as a reason for not switching.

For the 89% majority that plan to switch jobs, the primary objective for 63% of them was to further develop their technical skills. Improving work/life balance was second on the list with 52%.

Contrary to popular belief, the start of the year isn’t really a prime time for job resignations, as 87% of survey respondents had ever quit their jobs in January.

The IT Market in 2009
The IT Job Board decided to identify what IT professionals were predicting for the IT market. Of those surveyed, 48% believed that the economic downturn would negatively impact the IT market but not as much as other sectors. Only 26% thought there would be a significant negative impact on the IT market.

One surprising finding was that 10% of IT professionals surveyed actually felt the downturn would positively effect certain sectors of the market in 2009.
